The Origin of Bridge Cranes

Overhead cranes are material handling mechanisms designed with levers and/or pulleys for moving items of substantial weight. The cranes that most people are familiar with may appear as a modern-day invention, but material lifting devices have been in use for more than 2,000 years.

The Roman Empire used cranes to build huge monuments. The Renaissance period constructed medieval churches using cranes. The Egyptians may also have used a similar or more rudimentary lifting device to create their pyramids.

Based on their intended application, overhead cranes come in different variations and their configurations can range from quite simple to rather complex.
